MACON, Ga. (WGXA)-- — The Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation held its annual 9/11 ceremony in downtown Macon on Thursday, marking 24 years since the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and Twin Towers.

The event brought together the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, firefighters, and residents to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

Warren Shelby, with the foundation, emphasized the importance of remembrance. "We honor those who lost 2,977 lives that perished on 9/11 2001, so today is a remembrance day for all the families that lost their loved ones just to say to them we will never forget," said Shelby.

The Macon-Bibb Fire Department Honor Guard presented the colors as the flag was lowered to half-staff. Roses and a wreath were placed in memory.

Shelby noted the personal impact of the attacks on the local community. "We did lose one in Macon, Cole Hoga,n who was in the Pentagon when the Pentagon was hit, so it is close to home," he said.

The Georgia State Patrol's Aviation Division conducted a flyover as "Amazing Grace" was played on bagpipes.

Sheriff David Davis highlighted the ceremony's role in fostering unity. "Lord knows all the things we're having happening here lately in the country...ceremonies like this help keep us focused. Help keep our eyes on what's the most important thing and that is community, backing public safety and that is looking over all our differences," said Davis.
