ATLANTA, Ga. (WTOC) - Some Georgia House of Representative members have announced that they want to increase the minimum speed limit on select major highways. The proposed bill is aimed at raising the current minimum speed limit from 40 mph limit to 50.
Georgia lawmakers said the new minimum would pertain to highways with a maximum speed limit of 65 mph or higher. The bill’s sponsor said the 30-mile per hour gap between the slower drivers and the faster drivers has caused deadly rear-end crashes.
Critics of the bill argued the speed change could be too hard on senior citizens and student drivers.
The bill is still before the committee.
