ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — After years of searching for solutions to help with her daughter’s severe autism diagnosis, Jennifer Conforti now has a medical cannabis oil for sale on dispensary shelves across Georgia.

“I’m in disbelief that this is actually happening,” Conforti said. “I never thought as a child growing up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago to conservative parents that I would ever support cannabis, let alone have a product named after my daughter.”

Conforti’s daughter, Abby, has autism and was born with a congenital brain defect. Conforti said as a child, Abby often had severe meltdowns and would violently bite her right arm.

After trying more than 30 different supplements and medications, Conforti finally turned to medical cannabis.

“I had to break the law, and I had to break it hard,” Conforti said. “I had to learn on YouTube how to make it in my kitchen.”

Conforti admitted she illegally developed her own blend of THC oil at home while lobbying at the state capitol to legalize medical cannabis specifically for autism.

It was finally added to the list of qualifying conditions in 2017, along with other diseases like cancer, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.

Luwana Parker’s nonverbal, autistic daughter, Aje, has been taking Conforti’s THC blend for about a year. On Friday, she was able to buy it legally at Botanical Sciences in Stockbridge, a physician-owned medical cannabis provider.

“My first question was how many bottles can I buy at one time,” Parker said. “It has worked like night and day for my family.”

Conforti partnered with Botanical Sciences and CEO Gary Long to develop and produce the low-grade THC oil called Abby’s Hope. It’s fully compliant with the state’s strict medical standards.

“We just believe this is another tool in the toolbox that caregivers and patients alike could consider for the treatment of their particular disease or condition,” Long said.

Conforti hopes this small bottle can bring big change to more families like hers.

“Don’t lose hope. Don’t give up on the fact that your child has value. You know they have value and hopefully, maybe, we can bring a glimmer of the hope that we have discovered and the hope of God into their lives,” Conforti said.

Abby’s Hope is now available at all Botanical Sciences locations across Georgia in Stockbridge, Chamblee, Pooler and Marietta, and at some independent pharmacies.

You must bring your medical card, proving you have a qualifying condition, in order to purchase Abby’s Hope or any product at Botanical Sciences.
