OHATCHEE, Ala. (WBMA) — Some areas of East Central Alabama are beginning the cleanup process after severe storms swept through the area on Tuesday night.
One of the hardest-hit areas was Ohatchee, where Patty Shuler's home on Mudd Street was destroyed by strong winds. Shuler, who has lived in Ohatchee for 30 years, described the devastation.
"My home is destroyed. Destroyed completely. I mean, there’s a couple rooms that are still standing," she said, "When I walked inside, I just couldn’t believe it. My daughter's room is destroyed, our bathroom is destroyed, the living room.“
Shuler and her husband were not at home when the storm hit, a decision that may have saved their lives. "I was laying in bed. When we left, we just thought the [storm] was coming. We didn’t see nothing but we got out and went straight to a safe area," she said.
Reflecting on the loss, Shuler shared memories of her family home. "I had children grow up here. All the kids went to Ohatchee High School and they all graduated right here. This was our home," she said.
Despite the destruction, Shuler remains resilient. "We’re going to stay at his mom's home, which is his home now. We’re going to stay there and pick up the pieces I guess. That’s all we can do," she said.
There were also a number of downed trees and power lines blocking roads across Calhoun County. The county's Emergency Management Agency says there were no reported injuries.
