VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - Studies show that students can lose up to two months of learning over the summer — and for kids in low-income households, that gap can be even wider.

A Valdosta nonprofit Community Action of Georgia is racing against the clock as summer starts in less than 4 weeks, to make sure that doesn’t happen this summer. But they need the community’s help to do it.

Community Action of Georgia is trying to raise 25-thousand dollars by June 8, when their “Together We Learn” summer enrichment program is set to open its doors.

The program is targeting students who need it most offering everything from literacy support to life-skills workshops. Providing certified teachers, nutritious meals, STEM learning, and safe supervision for children of working families.

Without funding, organizers say many local kids could spend the summer unsupervised, missing meals, and falling further behind in reading and math.

”It’s our effort, our quest to reach 100 students and youth this summer." butted to “When you put a program like Together We Learn Bridging the Gap within access and walking distance such as the Southside Church of Christ, Morning Star Baptist Church, or wherever the program will be,” Carlos Hundley said. “Children can walk, families can bring their children, they are within walking distance so they can make the program. They can have access to that academic enrichment, they get the nutrition — they’re fed, they have supervision. There are a lot of benefits to it.”
