WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Pentagon announced Thursday it will immediately begin moving as many as 1,000 openly identifying transgender troops out of the military and give others who have yet to openly identify as transgender 30 days to remove themselves, according to a new directive.
"Today, the Department will issue guidance to the Military Departments and Services ending the accession of individuals with a current diagnosis or history of, or symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria and all non-medically necessary treatment," Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said. "Approximately 1,000 Service members who have self-identified as being diagnosed with gender dysphoria will begin the voluntary separation process."
The memo comes after the Supreme Court's decision allowing the Trump administration to enforce a ban on transgender individuals in the military.
When the ruling was announced, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told a special operations forces conference in Tampa, "We are leaving wokeness and weakness behind."
"No more pronouns, no more climate change obsessions, no more emergency vaccine mandates, no more DUDES IN DRESSES. We are done with that sh*t.” Hegseth said.
Officials have said that as of Dec. 9, 2024, there were 4,240 troops diagnosed with gender dysphoria in the active duty, National Guard and Reserve. But they acknowledge the number may be higher.
There are about 2.1 million total troops serving.
The memo sent out on Thursday mirrors one sent out in February, but action was stalled due to several lawsuits. Since the initial directive came out, about 1,000 service members have self-identified.
The new guidelines give active duty troops until June 6 to voluntarily identify and troops in the National Guard and Reserve have until July 7.
After Trump took office in January, he issued a flurry of executive orders aimed at the trans community and military members.
Since then, the Department of Veterans Affairs has started cracking down on healthcare for LGBTQ+ veterans, the federal government is required to recognize gender as male or female and prevent gender-affirming care for people under 19 years old.
