Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - In this week’s Restaurant Roundup, The Spud Spot, owned by Jonathan McCary, was featured after receiving a perfect score of 100 on its food service inspection, which took place on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

The Spud Spot also received a score of 100 on its previous inspection in October 2025.

McCary said the following regarding his process leading up to the inspection:

“It’s not a finger-cross type of situation when the health inspector walks in. When they walk in, we’re typically confident about what we’re going to receive from the health inspectors because it’s not preparing for the health inspectors, it’s preparing for service.”

McCary has been a professional cook for over 20 years and ultimately decided to venture into a more rare cuisine than what consumers would usually think to go for— loaded potatoes.

“I found a way to take some of my experience with gourmet cuisine and infuse it with a Southern comfort like loaded baked potatoes.”

The Spud Spot offers a variety of food items from loaded Philly cheesesteak potatoes to chili cheese baked potatoes and their popular sweet potato pound cake.

To maintain health standards on a daily basis, they have a list of necessary procedures that must be completed each day.

“If you check it throughout your shift consistently and ensure that the standard never deviates from perfection, then you can always expect perfection... When we pay attention to the checklist and ensure that all our Is are dotted and all our Ts are crossed, then we get the desired outcome.

The Spud Spot occasionally offers special menu items or special promotions. One of their popular recurring specials is their “Tater Tuesday.” On a day like Tater Tuesday, not only is it likely for them to sell out, but it can also get overwhelming with the amount of orders.

Despite the rush, the Spud Spot team ensures that they maintain the required health standards.

“We stay within the parameters of the expectations that have been set to give us the perfect scores that we’ve been receiving. And sometimes you get a little busy, but you can’t take shortcuts,” McCary said.

For restaurants looking to get a perfect score on their food service inspections, McCary advises taking a look at the guidelines the Georgia Department of Public Health has for the inspections.

“The health inspectors do a phenomenal job in ensuring that we have all the necessary information to receive a perfect score.”
