CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) — Grady County deputies, working alongside the U.S. Marshals Service, arrested two people Monday in connection with a violent fugitive investigation in Cairo.

Authorities say 35-year-old Navaris Benard Broomfield of Midway, Florida, and 39-year-old Ashley Marie Lewis of Cairo were taken into custody February 2, 2026, in front of a residence on 3rd Street Northeast.

Broomfield was wanted out of Tallahassee, Florida, on multiple charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, robbery, petit theft, and resisting a merchant. Investigators say during a Dollar General incident, Broomfield ran over a store clerk with a van before fleeing the scene.

According to law enforcement, Broomfield and Lewis attempted to avoid capture by living out of their vehicle in Cairo. Through investigative work, U.S. Marshals were able to locate and confirm Broomfield’s whereabouts, leading to a coordinated arrest without incident.

During the arrest, authorities say Broomfield was found in felony possession of synthetic drugs, commonly referred to as “SALT.” Lewis was found in possession of drug paraphernalia.

Grady County Sheriff Earl Prince said the arrests send a clear message that violent offenders are not welcome in the county.

“Grady County is an excellent place to live, work, and visit, and I intend to keep it that way,” Prince said. “If you are wanted by law enforcement, do not come here to hide. There is nowhere to run.”

Both suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.
