Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - WALB’s First Alert Weather team is tracking a winter weather system that could impact your weekend.

KEY MESSAGES:

  • Winter Storm brings severe weather to SGA on Sunday. Damaging winds and an isolated tornado is possible Sunday afternoon-Sunday evening. A First Alert Weather Day has been declared as a result for Sunday afternoon-Sunday evening.
  • A freeze Sunday night could make roads icy waking up Monday so be careful if you are up early driving on the roads. Coldest air of the season lingers through the upcoming work week.

TODAY/TONIGHT/SATURDAY- A slim chance for light showers is possible heading through your morning, but most of SGA will remain dry under cloudy skies. Highs will be mild today ranging from the 60s in NW counties to the low 70s on the SE counties. Tonight temperatures drop into the upper 40s with cloudy conditions lingering into Saturday. Highs will be in the low 60s tomorrow. A stray light shower will be possible as well Saturday.

SUNDAY- A First Alert Weather Day has been declared for Sunday due to the potential for severe weather. A line of potentially strong thunderstorms, ahead of a cold front, could bring an isolated severe threat for damaging winds and a tornado throughout Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. The line of storms will slowly weaken heading into the overnight hours as they move across SGA. Have a way to receive updates on this system, local timings and impacts will become clearer heading into the weekend.

SUNDAY NIGHT/MONDAY MORNING- Gusty NW winds will cause overnight lows to dive below freezing for the NW communities of SGA, including Albany. Wind chills could be in the teens and low 20s. As a result, any lingering liquid that fell from the thunderstorms earlier that evening will freeze overnight, potentially bringing patchy areas of ice in the morning. Make sure to drive with caution Monday morning. Despite the cold temperatures, ice will not be a threat for the rest of the work week.

WORK WEEK- Frigid temperatures stay with us. Overnight lows stay below freezing and afternoon highs will struggle to even get out of the 40s. A few Hard Freezes will be possible, especially Monday and Tuesday nights, so make sure to drip the pipes next week.
