Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — A significant weather pattern change is on the way for SGA this weekend. After a mild Saturday, a system will bring showers and thunderstorms Sunday, followed by dangerously cold temperatures that could impact your Monday morning commute and beyond.
What to Expect Sunday
Sunday, a FIRST Alert Weather Day begins with a few showers followed by a squall line and a large area of rain that’ll push through during the afternoon and evening. The timing of the severe threat is between 2 pm and 11 pm, with potential threats of damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes. Highs will reach near 72 degrees, but don’t let the warmth fool you — wind gusts could reach 30 mph, making conditions gusty and wet.
An 80% chance of rain and storms means you’ll want to keep an umbrella handy and plan indoor activities if possible. If you’re heading out, allow extra time for your commute as wet roads and gusty winds could create hazardous driving conditions.
The Real Story: Dangerous Cold Arrives Monday
The more significant concern is what happens after the rain stops. A strong cold front pushes through Sunday night into Monday morning, ushering in the coldest air of the season, allowing temperatures to plummet. Lows will drop into the low 30s degrees, but here’s the critical part: Monday night, temperatures will fall to around 19 degrees.
This is a dangerous freeze. If you have pets, plants, or outdoor water lines, now is the time to prepare. Bring pets inside, cover sensitive plants, and drip outdoor faucets to prevent frozen pipes.
Looking Ahead
The cold will persist through the week. Highs on Monday will only reach 44 degrees, and Tuesday won’t be much better at 43 degrees. Overnight lows will hover in the low 20s through Tuesday night.
By Wednesday, conditions will begin to moderate slightly with highs near 48 degrees, but the cold pattern remains entrenched through at least the middle of next week.
What You Should Do
- Sunday: Keep an umbrella and rain gear nearby. Plan for wet conditions and gusty winds after 2 p.m.
- Sunday night into Monday: Prepare your home and property for freezing temperatures. Bring in pets, cover plants, and check on elderly neighbors.
- Early next week: Dress in warm layers for the commute. The cold will be noticeable, especially in the mornings.
