(Gray News) – Actor Bobby J. Brown died in a barn fire in Maryland earlier this week, the medical examiner told several media outlets.

He was 62.

Brown, best known for his role as Officer Bobby Brown on “The Wire,” died of smoke inhalation, his daughter told TMZ.

“A representative for the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner further revealed that Brown’s cause of death was ruled as diffuse thermal injury and smoke inhalation, and the manner of death was determined to be an accident,” People reported.

Officials with the Maryland State Fire Marshal said in a press release that Brown had gone into his barn Tuesday night to try to jump-start a vehicle.

He reached out to the person he was trying to help and requested a fire extinguisher. Authorities said when the woman went outside, the fire had quickly spread throughout the barn.

In attempting to reach Brown, the woman’s hands were burned, officials said. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Family members told responding firefighters that someone was still inside the 50-by-100-foot barn when they arrived just after 10 p.m.

“My dad was an amazing human being,” Brown’s daughter, Reina, told People in an interview. “He was super awesome. He was a pillar in the community, and he’s going to be missed by a lot of people.”

In addition to “The Wire,” Brown also had prominent roles in “Law & Order: SVU.”
