LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) - Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has ordered flags to be lowered after a Haihira police officer died in the line of duty.
Caleb Abney was killed last week after being hit during a traffic stop on Interstate 75. According to the Georgia State Patrol, Abney was sitting in his marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated near mile marker 31 when a driver traveling nearly 100 mph crashed into the back of his car.
A celebration of life for Abney will take place on Sunday at Lowndes High School, where Abney is a 2018 graduate. The ceremony will take place at the football stadium at 2 p.m.
Kemp has ordered flags in Lowndes County and at the state capitol to be lowered that day to honor Abney.
