ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — A cancer diagnosis can change more than a person’s health, it can reshape how they see themselves.

At Phoebe Putney Health System’s Cancer Center, a boutique is helping patients navigate those changes with confidence, and leaders say it has grown significantly since it first opened its doors.

The Phoebe Cancer Center Boutique, located inside the Phoebe Cancer Center, sells medically approved products: wigs, turbans, scarves, pre and post-surgical bras, breast prostheses, camisoles, and compression sleeves and socks.

Monique Wilson, the boutique Cancer Care Coordinator, says she brings her own journey to her administrative role.

A nine-year breast cancer survivor, Wilson was diagnosed in July 2016 with stage one breast cancer and underwent surgery and radiation therapy.

Today, she uses that journey to guide other patients through some of the most personal aspects of their recovery.

Wilson explained each patient’s experience begins with a consultation and fitting, often before surgery, so Wilson can track changes and ensure the best possible outcome.

For Katrina Shepard, a current Phoebe patient, the boutique offers more than products.

As a current Phoebe cancer patient, she said the boutique serves as a reminder that cancer care can extend beyond medical treatment.

Wilson hopes the boutique supports patients like Shepard as they navigate through treatment.

Wilson said the Phoebe Cancer Center boutique is covered through insurance. The boutique is also open to self-pay customers, she explained, making its resources accessible to a wide range of patients across southwest Georgia.
