ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Albany Chapter of the Links, Inc. held the third annual Black Family Wellness Expo today on the Albany State University West Campus.

Organizers welcomed 15 Albany and Dougherty County area health providers and vendors who educated the public on the services available from preventive medicine to treating chronic health problems.

“And that’s what it’s all about-- so that families can take this information home with them, put it to use and get the results such that they improve their healthcare,” said Dr. Marsha Glover who is a pediatrician.

Another of the many positive aspects of the event is that it serves as a means of introducing the public to physicians who can help them and their families.

“We have doctors here-- doctors who live in the community, from the community, telling you how they care for you with your chronic illness and telling you how to prevent these chronic illnesses,” said Dr. Dianna Grant-Burke who is a retired chief medical officer with Phoebe Putney Health System.

A local chef also participated in today’s demonstrations. He taught attendees about purchasing affordable food items and making healthy family meals.

Members of the Albany Links, Inc. said they hope to keep building the event bigger and better each year.

While the health fair does address healthcare disparities in the community, organizers added that South Georgians make up one big family and they want the entire community to know everyone is always welcomed at the health expo.
