ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Visitors to parts of downtown Atlanta will be able to have alcohol outside starting April 15.
Consumption will be allowed between Ted Turner Drive and Peachtree Street and between Trinity Avenue and Alabama Street.
Some residents love the idea, especially in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“It’s great. And hopefully the bars are starting to think about putting in, you know, drive up windows, kind of walk up style, and grab and go,” said Bryan McBrien.
Other residents are more concerned.
“I went to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and I know how important it is to have a venue in which people can be together and drink. That’s just part of the World Cup tradition. If Atlanta can carry that forward, but we can be safe and responsible, then fine. The minute it’s not that way, you need to shut it down,” said Stacey Nickson.
Some, however, are downright worried about the ripple effects of allowing alcohol consumption in public places.
“Knowing how crazy Atlanta get. Not gonna lie, it’s gonna it might be a little exciting time, but I work at over at the stadium, so seeing all the people when they leave the games and all that could be a little pros and cons to it, but I think it’ll be a good little time for Atlanta, knowing how part, how powerful the city is,” said Dionte Stallings.
For the people at Wild Leap Brewery, walking with an open container is not necessarily new, but for other bars, it’s going to be something completely different.
Those who work at Sidebar are more than ready.
“Honestly, it allows us to be free and free spirit in a safe environment for people to let loose. It’s almost like a barbecue with your friends,” said Kami Brice, a bartender.
