Description
ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) - On October 22, 1766, David Mitchell, who served three terms as Georgia’s governor, was born.
Mitchell served as governor from 1809 to 1813 and again from 1815 to 1817. He prioritized economic development, military defense and infrastructure during his time in office.
Mitchell may be the namesake of South Georgia’s Mitchell County, though historical sources disagree on the county’s origin. Some sources indicate the county was named after Governor Mitchell, while others suggest it was named after Revolutionary War General Henry Mitchell.
