THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) - A proposal to raise sales taxes for Thomas County residents by one cent as a way to lower residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural taxes has passed by an overwhelming margin.

More than 87% of voters said yes to the proposal, according to Thomas County Supervisor of Elections Frank Scoggins. The final tally was 2,878 votes in favor and 409 votes against.

More News out of South Georgia:

Officials said the one-cent tax increase would lead to a nearly 25% reduction for property owners in 2026 and about a 50% reduction in 2027.

The proposal will go into effect on July 1.
