THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WALB) — Thomasville High School brought home two state soccer championships Thursday night, with both the girls and boys teams claiming Class A Division I titles at the same location.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated Model 1-0 in double overtime to cap an undefeated 23-0 season. Sara Cameron Sullivan scored the winning goal with 53 seconds remaining in the second overtime period off a corner kick from Sadie Scarborough.

“We’ve worked so hard for this,” said senior forward Leila Lutes. “I mean, just the past four years, really the past seven years, us seniors together have been playing since we were babies.”

The match remained scoreless through regulation and the first overtime period. Thomasville had multiple opportunities in the final minutes, including three corner kicks.

With under a minute remaining, Scarborough delivered a corner kick that the Model keeper initially stopped, but Sullivan was there for the rebound and scored on her second touch.

“I just knew it was all or nothing,” Sullivan said. “I knew if we weren’t going to do it then, it was never going to happen.”

Head coach Lucas Kimmel praised his team’s perseverance through the 100-minute match.

“They just wanted it,” Kimmel said. “We knew after the last few games, we were capable of this.”

The Lady Bulldogs finished the season allowing only eight goals while winning all 23 matches.

Boys avenge last year’s loss

The boys team followed with a 1-0 victory over Armuchee, the same team that defeated Thomasville 4-3 in last year’s state final.

Freshman Donzee Applewhite scored the only goal with 15 minutes remaining in regulation, heading in a cross from Gio Ulloa.

“These boys wanted it,” said head coach Robert Peterson. “We talked about it at the end of last year. The first thing they said is, we’ll be back.”

Goalkeeper Connor Pringle recorded multiple saves throughout the match, including a stop on a free indirect kick in the box.

“Defense wins championships,” Peterson said. “From the start of the playoffs, they’ve been just lights out.”

Applewhite, who has practiced with the varsity team since sixth grade, said the team learned from last year’s loss.

“We knew what it was coming into it,” Applewhite said. “We have put in the work day one.”

Senior Gio Ulloa, who assisted on the winning goal, said the team kept its promise to return.

“I remember I said at McEachern that we would be back, and I feel like we’ve stuck with our word,” Ulloa said.

Peterson celebrated both championships with his family, including his daughter who won the girls title.

“It’s unbelievable that the city of Thomasville bring it home,” Peterson said.
