TIFT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — The Tift County sheriff will not run for re-election.
Sheriff Gene Scarbrough announced Thursday, Oct. 1, that he will not seek re-election in 2028. Scarbrough said he will remain in his position for the remainder of his term.
The announcement was made on the Tift County Sheriff’s office Facebook page.
“After several months of discussions with family and friends, I have decided that I will NOT seek a fifth term as the Sheriff of Tift County in 2028.”
Scarbrough said the early announcement would “give the prospective candidates ample time to present their desires and qualifications to the registered voters of Tift County.”
The sheriff says he will remain in the position for the next 27 months.
Scarbrough has served as the Tift County sheriff for four terms.
