WASHINGTON (TNND) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Donald Trump will hold virtual talks on Wednesday, ahead of a Trump-Putin summit in Alaska later this week, to discuss an end to the Kremlin's war in Ukraine.

The meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage on Friday, where he is expected to demand that Ukraine give up territory in return for a ceasefire.

Zelenskyy has rejected the idea and accused Putin on Tuesday of preparing for a "new offensive operation" and meeting with Trump as a "personal victory."

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Zelenskyy isn't invited to the summit because the Russian leader asked Trump to meet, not the other way around.

"This meeting came about because the president of Russia asked the president of the United States to meet through his Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who as you all know, traveled to Russia to have a conversation with Putin at his request," Leavitt said during a news briefing. "And so the president is agreeing to this meeting at the request of President Putin, and the goal of this meeting for the president is to walk away with a better understanding of how we can end this war."

In an effort to amplify the voices of European and Ukrainian leaders ahead of the summit, Zelenskyy will join German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin to prepare for "possible peace negotiations" and potential "territorial claims," the German government said.

Merz invited the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Finland, Italy, Poland, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

“The talks will focus on further options for action to put pressure on Russia,” the government said.

Zelenskyy warned ahead of the meeting that “pressure must be exerted on Russia for the sake of a fair peace."

"At present, there is no sign that the Russians are preparing to end the war. Our coordinated efforts and joint actions – of Ukraine, the United States, Europe, and all countries that seek peace – can definitely compel Russia to make peace. I thank everyone who is helping."

When Zelenskyy last visited Berlin in late May, Merz pledged to help Ukraine develop its own long-range missile systems that would be free of any Western-imposed limitations on their use and targets as the Kyiv government fights to repel Russia’s invasion.

The Ukrainian leader on Wednesday said his government has had over 30 conversations and consultations with partners ahead of the summit in Alaska, but reiterated his doubt that Putin would negotiate in good faith to end the war.

Writing on his official Telegram channel, Zelenskyy said there was “currently no sign that the Russians are preparing to end the war,” and urged Ukraine's partners in the United States and Europe to coordinate efforts and "force Russia to peace.”

"Pressure must be applied on Russia for an honest peace. We must take the experience of Ukraine and our partners to prevent deception by Russia,” Zelenskyy said.
