WASHINGTON (TNND) — U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum doubled to 50% on Wednesday morning, potentially impacting prices on the metal used to make housing, autos and other goods.
President Donald Trump announced the increase in tariffs last week while delivering remarks at U.S. Steel in Pennsylvania.
"I have determined that increasing the previously imposed tariffs will provide greater support to these industries and reduce or eliminate the national security threat posed by imports of steel and aluminum articles and their derivative articles," Trump states in his executive order.
The higher tariffs would "more effectively counter foreign countries that continue to offload low-priced, excess steel and aluminum in the United States market and thereby undercut the competitiveness of the United States steel and aluminum industries," Trump adds in the order.
Trump said all steelworkers would keep their jobs, there would be no layoffs and all facilities would remain open. He also said every U.S. Steel worker will soon receive a $5,000 bonus.
The Steel Manufacturers Association applauded Trump's order, saying, “American-made steel is at the heart of President Trump’s plan to revitalize domestic manufacturing and return our country to an economic powerhouse."
However, a European Commission official said the metal tariffs "adds further uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic."
The president of industry group the Can Manufacturers Institute, Robert Budway, said the hike would "further increase the cost of canned goods" at grocery stores.
"This cost is levied upon millions of American families relying on canned foods picked and packed by U.S. farmers, food producers, and can makers," he added.
Last week, a panel of judges blocked Trump's “Liberation Day” levies, ruling them illegal and that the president had overstepped his authority by declaring a national emergency to implement the tariffs.
An appeals court has granted the administration temporary relief while it hears arguments on the case that could be appealed and ultimately heard in front of the Supreme Court.
