SYLVESTER, Ga. (WALB) — The city of Sylvester is actively taking steps to help more of its residents eventually own their own homes.

The city, along with the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing, held its annual Home Ownership Fair Saturday, Aug. 15, in downtown Sylvester.

Residents who came were able to ask questions and meet with industry experts from banks, realtor companies and insurance agencies.

Those in attendance were also able to learn more about home insurance options, mortgage lending information, ways to improve credit, down payment assistance and many other strategies and resources.

Organizers said there a lot of people in Sylvester who currently rent. The annual fair is designed to help people who want to buy or build a home do so.

“There are a lot of people here who rent or who want to stop renting and purchase a home,” said Ebony Moore, Community Development Director for the city. “It’s good for the city of Sylvester to have this event so they can come out and see what proper steps they need to take to own a home.”

Moore also said that financing and pricing are some of the top barriers for those who are looking to buy in the area.

“In the market today, there are a lot of homes that are priced high. A lot of people can’t afford it,” said Moore. “The first thing is, we have to have jobs to purchase a home.”

Although Sylvester is a nice town to live in and has job opportunities, according to Moore, the housing can discourage people.

“That’s what the GICH Team, along with myself, we strive to bring homes. To get the people and work with other agencies so that we can have affordable housing here in Sylvester,” said Moore.
