Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Albany State University’s lockdown has been lifted following shots being fired near campus.
WALB has confirmed that a 17-year-old girl was shot near ASU’s East Campus. She is at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Students and staff have received a text message that said, “This is NOT a test. Report of gunshots fired near east campus. Seek shelter. For safety, lock doors and remain inside until an all clear has been issued.” They have since received the “all clear”.
ASU students Zqueria Hemby and Arianna Zann said they were in their room when they got the lockdown alert.
“Yes, Albany is crazy! We are lowkey used to it. We have seen it before. These locals are very crazy,” they said. “I wish the campus wasn’t so open, because locals do just walk around and whatever, and I don’t like that.”
There was a heavy police presence at the Wild Pines Apartments located at 600 Sands Drive. While on scene, WALB saw one man in handcuffs.
Albany Police Department tells WALB that the investigation is ongoing, and they are currently waiting on a search warrant.
