NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — An undocumented immigrant has been identified as the suspect in a hit-and-run crash that severely hurt a tourist celebrating his birthday in Nashville.
On Church Street, where the accident happened, you can clearly see a yield to pedestrians sign.
Officials said that the suspect ignored it, hitting the victim.
FOX 17 News spoke exclusively to the victim, who is still painfully recovering.
His mom told FOX 17 News enough is enough.
Tony Lopez-Infante, an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, is accused of a hit-and-run crash that hurt Zach Carach on his 21st birthday in Midtown.
He looks both ways before a car sends him flying through the air.
The person rushing behind him is his mother, Sheena Carach.
"Why are we just welcoming every single person without a vetting process?" she asked.
She said everyone who comes here legally is welcome, but those who are not vetted can cause serious harm, like what happened to her son.
Zach recalled the aftermath of the crash at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
"They had me in there trying to work on my eye and get it stitched up, and I was just could not stop, like my arm was killing me," he said.
He said he is currently in his town of Florida in a wheelchair.
"That's inhumane. I don't understand how a person could even do that to another person," said Sheena.
"This is a heartless individual who hit another human being and fled."
Metro Police said they eventually found the car at a rental spot in Mount Juliet, but Lopez-Infante has not been found.
Thursday, Metro Police outlined that Lopez-Infante has several outstanding warrants.
This includes one in Williamson County for a probation violation on a theft arrest.
ICE spokesperson Lindsay Williams told FOX 17 News Lopez-Infante entered the US illegally in August of 2023.
Williams also said Lopez-Infante has a final order of removal.
"The fact that he is illegally here made it a lot harder to get information on him," said Sheena.
Zach said catching Lopez-Infante is more important than his legal status.
"It's just the fact of what he did. That's all that really matters to me," he said.
