Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — A project to improve safety and traffic flow at three busy Albany intersections is moving forward after receiving more than $1 million in grant funding.
The Westover Triangle Project will upgrade intersections in the city’s Westover area with new traffic signals, additional turn lanes, sidewalks and pedestrian crosswalks.
According to Ward 4 Commissioner Chad Warbington, there were 123 crashes at the intersection of Old Dawson Road and North Westover Boulevard from 2020-2024.

“We quickly put a project together to partner with the city so that this entire triangle section could have all the intersections modernized, improved, improved safety, improved pedestrian facilities, and just modernize the lights where they’re on secure poles versus wires,” Warbington said. “The city was really excited when we found out we got one point one million dollars of funding.”
The money comes from a Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank grant, along with $2 million funded by the City of Albany T-SPLOST funds.
Warbington said the project will help make drivers and pedestrians safer.
“Right now, you can look at the intersection, and there is no pedestrian facilities. You know, if somebody wants to walk from a business to a business, you’re kind of taking your life in your own hands. You’re walking on grass, you’re walking through bushes, hard times when it is good to walk and people want to walk. We just don’t have the opportunity for them to safely walk. So we’re really excited to correct safety opportunities for pedestrians,” Warbington said.
Construction on the project is scheduled to start in 2027.
