ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Albany State’s baseball team swept Clark Atlanta this weekend and defeated Middle Georgia on Tuesday to extend its winning streak to four games.

The Golden Rams improved to 20-12 overall after starting the season 1-5. They have gone 19-7 since the slow start.

Albany State has just one loss at home this season. The team is fourth in the conference in E.R.A and fifth in hitting.

Health, consistency key factors

Coach Hemmings said his team had its full lineup available for the first time in weeks.

“Last 15 games, we were 7-8 coming into this weekend,” Hemmings said. “So we’ve kind of been up and down a little bit. We had some injuries, had a couple guys get sick. And then this weekend, we had our full lineup out there and Jeremiah Riddell back in the rotation.”

Hemmings said the sweep was one of the first weekends since Kentucky State that his team finished off all three games.

Finishing games remains focus

Hemmings said his team needs to close out games more effectively as the season progresses.

“I think right there, when we’re up 5-1 in the fifth inning, we have second and third. I think we’ve got to stretch that lead in the tournament,” Hemmings said. “Instead of having to go to another bullpen arm, I think we’ve got to figure out a way to kind of finish teams off instead of letting them hang around.”

He said the difference between this year’s team and previous years has been the ability to finish games without using additional pitchers.

Conference standings

Spring Hill leads the conference standings. Albany State is in second place, followed by Edward Waters, Benedict and Savannah State. Clark Atlanta is at the bottom of the conference.

More than half the conference teams are at .500 or better in region play.

Hemmings said his team has not played its best game yet this season.
