Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — The Albany State softball team swept Talladega in a doubleheader, winning 19-0 in the first game and 10-4 in the second.

Avery Fisher led the Rams with three hits in three at-bats in the second game. Fisher brought home Ariana McKenzie and Abigail Jones in the bottom of the second inning.

McKenzie hit a home run with two on and two outs in the same inning. The Rams scored five runs on five hits to open the game.

Freshmen contribute to victory

Freshman Tranesha Parker recorded her 31st RBI of the year. McKenzie scored three runs in the game.

Fisher, the team’s leading hitter with 48 hits on the season, scored on a hit by the next batter.

“We’ve had a great year. We’re in a good position. We’re number one in the East by three, four games, whatever it is,” head coach Jason Bryant said. “But we know all that can come tumbling down if we don’t stay focused. So, we’re just trying to play one pitch at a time. Practice one day at a time. See how good it comes out at the end.”

Team standings and outlook

Albany State leads the SIAC East by three games over Savannah State. Clark, Fort Valley and Edward Waters follow in the standings.

The Rams roster includes 16 freshmen and sophomores, led by three seniors: Fisher, Brielle Thompson and Ariel Reed. Fisher was predicted to be first team this year, with Reed predicted for second team.

“Well, I know that I personally want it really bad,” Fisher said about winning a championship. “And I think everybody else does, especially the freshmen. They really want to do it for us seniors. So, like I said, we really just want to stick together and hopefully get it done this season.”

The team will face Allen University in a doubleheader this weekend, followed by games against Clark, Georgia Southwestern, Fort Valley and Trinity Baptist to close out the regular season before the SIAC tournament in Columbus.
