ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — The city of Albany now owns the former Pretoria Fields property at 120 Pine Avenue after months of delays tied to financial and legal issues.
City commissioners decided that Albany’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA) will manage the property where Pretoria Fields once operated. Now, commissioners are debating about what happens next.
This summer, the city put out a bid for the space, and a company called Slow Pour expressed interest. The commission is split between three options: move forward with Slow Pour Brewing’s existing bid, reopen the bidding process to attract more bidders or give Pretoria Fields another shot.
Ward 2 Commissioner Willie Weaver said he does not like that last option.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea, the majority of the city commission think that they were given a chance, and a lot of them think that [Pretoria] owes the city at least a million dollars,” Weaver said.
But community advocate Blythe Henderson said she does not think the city has taken responsibility. She said the city failed to regulate Pretoria Fields and let them fall too far behind on payments.
“This is systemic. This is just the boldest example I can find of what has been going on and what will continue to go on if there is no transparency about what is happening here. Which is honesty when we know better, we do better,” Henderson said.
Commissioner Weaver, who represents the downtown area, was asked if he agreed with this claim.
“I don’t want to jump on the prior commission, but to be straightforward and honest like I am, they screwed it up. The financing part of it and the contract was not sufficient for the city to keep ownership and manage it. This time, we will have another management — the DDA — to come in. But yes, to answer the question directly, the city messed up the first time around,” Weaver said.
Mayor Bo Dorough said he would like to reopen the bidding process now that the city has control of its future. He is encouraging anyone to bid, including Pretoria Fields, mainly because they have local ties to this community and can brew on site.
City officials said he will officially decide how to move forward at the beginning of next year.
