Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — The Albany Police Department (APD) is partnering with community groups this summer on a youth engagement effort aimed at providing teens a safe place to spend time and reducing unsupervised evening activity.

In a county commission meeting on Monday, June 15, APD announced the Safe Haven Project. Leaders said it will offer three events for children ages 12-18 at the Albany Civic Center. They said they hope to draw about 350 young people.

Police said the events will include a movie, music, and other entertainment, plus arts and activities, with concessions available. Food trucks are also being invited.

The project is seeking about 20 volunteers from city and county crews, and organizers estimate costs at about $7,500. Donations are being accepted to help fund the events.

Police said safety measures will include a clear-bag policy, entry screening and wristbands. Officers will also be on-site and patrol the parking lot during the events.

“[The youth] have been asking for it. They say there’s nothing to do,” Albany Police Chief Michael Persley, said. “A lot of times people want to go somewhere to have fun and enjoy themselves... let them have something to do where they can use their energy, sit with their friends and be themselves for a moment. That’s what we’re looking for.”

Chief Persley said there is no registration, and youth are expected to just show up.

The dates are July 10, July 31, and Aug. 7. Each event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
