ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The college baseball super regionals begin Friday with eight best-of-three series to determine which teams advance to the College World Series, following a weekend of upsets that eliminated two of the tournament’s top seeds.

No. 2 Georgia Tech fell to Oklahoma in 10 innings after blowing a 7-3 lead in the Atlanta Regional final. The Yellow Jackets scored seven unanswered runs but could not hold off the Sooners, who rallied with five runs over the final four innings to force extra innings and won on a solo home run from Dayton Tockey in the 10th.

Georgia Tech worked out of a 0-3 deficit after Oklahoma plated three runs in the bottom of the first. Drew Burress began the comeback with his 60th career home run, a 418-foot shot to deep center field that also scored Carson Kerce, who reached on a walk, to make it 2-3 in the top of the third.

Parker Brosius launched his 10th home run since May 8, and fourth of the regional, to tie the game 3-3 to open the fifth. Seconds later, Caleb Daniel sailed a solo shot to right field, putting Tech in front 4-3.

Georgia Tech’s collapse

Tech added three runs in the sixth inning, capitalizing on a throwing error from the Sooners. With runners on first and third with one out, Brosius grounded out to first, but Tockey looked for a double play and threw the ball into the outfield, scoring Alex Hernandez and moving Kent Schmidt to third. RBI singles from Daniel and Kerce extended Tech’s lead to 7-3.

The Yellow Jackets posted seven unanswered runs behind Mason Patel, who threw five scoreless innings out of the bullpen before Oklahoma scored two in the seventh to make it 7-5. The Sooners made it a one-run game in the eighth, scoring on a fielding error. Dylan Loy came in with runners on first and second and one out and forced Jason Walk into a line drive to Kerce, who turned it into a double play at second to end the inning.

Oklahoma tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single, forcing extra innings.

Florida State eliminated

Florida State fell 5-4 to St. John’s in the Tallahassee Regional final, ending the Seminoles’ season at 40-19. After losing the first game of the regional, Florida State fought back to the final but could not beat the Red Storm twice as required by the double elimination format.

Florida State outhit St. John’s nine to three but left eight runners on base.

Cal Fisher put the Seminoles ahead with a solo home run in the top of the third inning. Florida State added another run in the top of the fifth when Brody DeLamielleure singled to center field, bringing in John Stuetzer to put the Seminoles up 2-0.

St. John’s loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, and Adam Agresti blasted a grand slam over the center field wall to give the Red Storm a 4-2 lead. St. John’s added another run in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch.

A late Florida State rally in the ninth fell short. Fisher hit a two-run home run, his second of the day, to get the Seminoles within one, but DeLamielleure struck out looking for the third out.

Georgia advances

Third-ranked Georgia defeated Liberty 6-1 on Sunday to win the Athens Regional and advance to an eighth super regional in program history.

Graduate right-hander Caden Aoki started for the Bulldogs, firing six innings and allowing only one run while striking out a career-high 11 to earn the win. Liberty scored its sole run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Jaxon Sorenson.

Tre Phelps got the Bulldogs on the board in the sixth inning with a two-run home run, his 19th of the year. Zach Brown entered in relief in the seventh and tossed three scoreless frames to close out the game, earning his second save of the year.

The Bulldogs added four runs in the bottom of the eighth with a solo shot by Michael O’Shaughnessy, an RBI double by Rylan Lujo and a two-run single by Ryan Wynn. The home run was O’Shaughnessy’s 18th of the year and his first in an NCAA Regional.

Georgia closed out the Athens Regional 3-0 and improved to 40-22 all-time in NCAA Regionals. The Bulldogs will advance to their first super regional since 2024, when they hosted NC State at Foley Field.

Phelps was ejected from the game after hitting his home run. Shortly after giving his team a 2-1 lead, Phelps was tossed after talking to and throwing hand signals in the direction of the Liberty bench as he made his way up the first-base line. Georgia coach Wes Johnson was also ejected after he came on the field to argue the ejection.

Due to the ejection, Phelps will be forced to miss his team’s next game. Georgia will play the opener without the freshman, who was suspended for one game.

With No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Georgia Tech out of the tournament, Georgia takes over as one of the teams to beat for the national championship, along with North Carolina.

West Virginia vs. Cal Poly
