Restaurant Report: Dead mouse found in Moultrie seafood spot, Douglas food truck gets perfect score

Description

DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) — On this week’s Restaurant Report, Chef Curry’s Quick Eats got a perfect score on its food service inspection. Firehouse Subs in Tifton got the lowest score on this week’s report, scoring an 84, with Captain D’s Seafood in Moultrie earning an 89.

Captain D’s Seafood had six infractions, two of which were corrected on-site. Of the six, three were new violations, three were repeat violations and four had to be corrected within the first week of June.

Of the six infractions, the most alarming one was that inspectors “Observed [a] dead mouse near [the] ice machine in the back of the facility.”

According to the inspection report, the dead mouse was removed, and the violation was corrected while the inspector was on-site.

Chef Curry’s Quick Eats is new to Douglas, but owner Veoliver Curry II is already setting a high bar. The mobile wing spot opened about two months ago and has earned a perfect 100 on its initial health inspection and a second 100 on a follow-up visit on Tuesday, May 26.

“I just enjoy cooking,” Curry said. “I love to fix food and make people smile.”

The truck is most known for its long list of both wing and egg roll flavors. Curry says there are over 30 flavors.

Curry runs the truck solo, which he says has a big upside: consistency.

“The food gonna be cooked the way I want it. The customer service is gonna be 100%,” he said. The challenge is simple: doing everything himself.

Keeping that perfect score comes down to daily discipline—wiping down surfaces, staying organized, wearing gloves and a chef hat and maintaining proper temperatures. Curry said food trucks also have to be mindful about storage. Dry goods can stay onboard, but food must be removed and stored properly off the truck.

“Make sure all your equipment [is] keeping the right temps,” he said, recommending thermometers in every refrigerator, hot water at the right temperature and sanitation chemicals stored correctly. At Chef Curry’s, everything is cooked to order, so there are no leftovers.

Chef Curry’s Quick Eats is located at Courson’s Tires in Douglas, near Highway 441 and Highway 125—with a 12-foot inflatable that “looked just like me… waving at everybody,” Curry said.

The food truck’s hours are Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While he’s had catering requests, Curry said he’s not taking them on yet.

“You got to crawl before you walk,” he said.

For now, he’s staying put until he finds help that matches his standards—clean, courteous and committed to his recipes.
