ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - A winter weather advisory is issued for South Georgia as snow is expected on Sunday, Jan. 18.

Rainy conditions are expected across South Georgia through Saturday evening, but a significant change is on the way as we head into the early morning hours of Sunday.

Winter Weather Advisory in Effect

Parts of South Georgia are under a winter weather advisory for the potential of a wintery mix and even snow. Authorities emphasize that this event will not be as severe as last year’s winter weather.

Stay Home if Possible

Sumter County EMA Director Jerry Harmon is urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the winter weather event.

“If you don’t have to get out, stay at home. Enjoy the snow at home. Don’t get out. This could hinder emergency vehicles,” Harmon said.

Safety Reminders for Extreme Cold

With temperatures forecasted to drop Sunday night into Monday morning, emergency management officials are reminding residents of important safety precautions:

For elderly residents and those using space heaters: Consider alternative heating methods. Officials encourage people to stay with neighbors or visit one of the warming shelters that are currently open for warming shelter assistance.

Resources Available

For more information about warming shelters in your area and the latest weather forecast, contact your local emergency management office.
