ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — The execution of a Georgia death row inmate was stayed Tuesday, just hours after he was denied clemency, according to documents and the man’s attorney.

Stacey Humphreys was convicted of malice murder and sentenced to death in 2007 in the 2003 killings of two Cobb County real estate agents: 33-year-old Cyndi Williams and 21-year-old Lori Brown.

The Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles denied Humphreys’ clemency petition Tuesday morning. A stay of execution was issued shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to court documents.

The stay was issued in order for there to be a hearing on whether Humphreys’ case qualifies for consideration under the Georgia Survivor Justice Act, which allows for sentencing leniency if there is a history of trauma.

Humphreys was set to receive a lethal injection at the state prison near Jackson at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

If executed, he will be the first person to be executed in Georgia since March 2024.
