Description

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) — A man was arrested on Tuesday, March 24, after driving under the influence of narcotics, crashing his vehicle and forcing entry into a stranger’s home, the Valdosta Police Department (VPD) announced Friday. VPD said the man had four small children in the vehicle with him.

Jeremy Jamal Curry, a 29-year-old, was taken to the Lowndes County Jail Tuesday night, VPD said. Officers said they responded to the 500 block of East Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at about 10:45 p.m. to find Curry sitting on the kitchen floor of someone else’s residence. The resident called E911 and reported that Curry kicked the door down and ran inside without their consent, according to VPD.

After struggling with Curry, VPD said officers found a baggie of cocaine on Curry’s person.

VPD investigators then found that Curry had crashed a vehicle before he entered the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive residence.

There were two infants and two children under 10 years old in the vehicle when Curry struck a fence and a tree, according to VPD. After the crash, Curry exited the vehicle and entered the residence.

Officers reportedly checked on the children, and they were turned over to a relative. The relative told police that she would take all four to the hospital, even though no immediate injuries were observed.

Curry was taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment, VPD said. Once released, he was taken to the Lowndes County Jail.

Curry was charged with the following, according to VPD:

  • Criminal damage to property 2nd degree (felony)
  • Possession of a controlled substance (felony)
  • Driving under the influence (misdemeanor)
  • Driving under the influence, child endangerment (misdemeanor) - 4 counts
  • Hit-and-run accident (misdemeanor)
  • Driving while unlicensed (misdemeanor)
  • Criminal trespass (misdemeanor)
  • Obstruction of an officer (misdemeanor)

VPD Chief Leslie Manahan described the incident as dangerous and unacceptable.

“We are fortunate that this situation did not end in a tragedy,” Manahan said. “His careless decision to drive while under the influence of narcotics, with children in the vehicle, shows a blatant disregard for their safety and for the safety of others on the roadway. The danger was then compounded when he forced entry into a residence, putting more innocent people at serious risk. This type of behavior is not only dangerous, but it is unacceptable.”
