Description

Just last Wednesday, we told you about the anticipation for Fort Valley State University’s Homecoming. On Wednesday, the celebration officially kicked off.

Hundreds of Wildcats gathered at the Amphitheater on campus for the Blueprint Homecoming, which marks a special milestone this year — the university’s 130th anniversary.

The week of festivities also highlights 10 years of leadership for University President Paul Jones. To mark the occasion, Jones tossed footballs into the crowd, with two lucky students catching a special prize: a $200 scholarship each.

Tayler Graham, one of the recipients, said she was shocked when the ball landed in her hands. “At first, I really didn’t think I was going to get it, but I just wanted to participate anyway. But when the ball actually landed in my hands, I got so excited I started jumping around and everything.”

Another student, Nakeyviean Lyons, said he had a strategy. “I had a game plan out of the drum, but whatever he threw it to, I was going to go get it. I got to go get that ball; I got to go get that money, and I’m grateful for the scholarship.”

The celebration continues throughout the week, with events building up to the big Homecoming game.

And tonight, the festivities include a Tiny Desk Concert on campus. Stay tuned for more coverage tonight at 11 on ABC16.
