Description
LONG COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - According to the Georgia State Patrol, a driver crashed into two Georgia Department of Transportation vehicles despite having their warning lights on which caused one worker to jump off a bridge to avoid it.
According to the report, two GDOT work vehicles were working at the median and bridge-way of Back Swamp Bridge on June 13 at around 9 a.m. The lead vehicle was partially on the median shoulder and left eastbound roadway, moving slowly behind was the other GDOT vehicle.
The GSP reported their warning lights and flashers were on as they worked on the side of the road.
The GDOT worker, Tony Reynolds, sprayed herbicide at the median and left side of the bridge-way when the cars collided. He thought he would get hit and chose to jump over the bridge to avoid it, which is about a 40-foot drop to a dry area under the bridge.
WTOC has reached out to family members for comment as he recovers from a broken hip and other injuries.
The report stated that the driver who crashed into the GDOT workers thought they were slowed down and that their flashers were not on at the time. The driver told authorities they checked their mirror to see if he could pass them in time but struck them going between 65-70 miles per hour.
A witness at the scene stated to authorities the GDOT vehicle was on the side of the road with flashing lights on.
They checked on the driver, cutting the airbag to reach them. The witness stated that’s when they saw Reynolds had jumped off the bridge to avoid the collision.
