ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) - Georgia lawmakers are weighing major changes to the state’s hemp and cannabis laws, including a ban on synthetic hemp products and an expansion of the medical cannabis program, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Industry Concerns Over Synthetic Hemp

David Spang, co‑owner of Coastal Green Wellness, warned that the proposed ban could harm the hemp industry.

“You’re removing access to the most true-to-plant hemp products… solely geared at crippling an industry,” Spang said, reflecting concerns from business owners and advocates.

Medical Cannabis Expansion

Supporters of expanding medical cannabis argue that current restrictions on THC levels limit treatment options for patients. The proposed legislation would allow higher-THC products for qualifying patients, giving them more flexibility in managing pain and other conditions.

But not everyone supports the expansion.

“What’s before us is a bill that gets people high on THC. That’s what this is about,” State Senator Ed Setzler said.

Legislative Timeline

Both the synthetic hemp ban and the medical cannabis expansion are expected to move through the Georgia legislature before the session ends Thursday, April 2, potentially reshaping hemp and cannabis access in the state.
