AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) - An effort to fight food insecurity in South Georgia is continuing to make an impact.
Over the weekend, Healthy Sumter partnered with Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and Big Bethel Missionary Baptist Church to distribute 150 fresh produce boxes to families in Americus and Sumter County.
The giveaway is part of a larger initiative focused on addressing food insecurity and improving access to healthy foods across the region.
Organizers say efforts also include creating community gardens and teaching residents how to grow their own food at home.
The next giveaway will be held April 11 at the Sumter County Fairgrounds.
