DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) — A 57-year-old Douglas man was arrested after he allegedly stole copper wire from Satilla REMC, a rural electric cooperative, and attempted to sell it to a local recycling business, according to Douglas Now.
According to Douglas Now, a deputy responded to a theft call at Satilla REMC just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17. The complainant told the deputy that two rolls of copper wire were missing, one from a recycling bin and another taken from a truck on the premises.
The complainant contacted Jewell’s Recycling to alert them, Suspecting that the alleged thief would take the copper to Jewell’s, according to Douglas Now. At 3:10 p.m., someone from Jewell’s called the complainant back and said a person did in fact arrive, attempting to sell the copper.
Officers identified the individual as Eric Lamar Campbell, 57, of Douglas, according to Douglas Now. Campbell was detained and the copper was returned to Satilla REMC.
Campbell admitted to taking the wire and said he attempted to sell it in order to pay for a visit to the dermatologist.
Campbell was charged with criminal trespass and entering an auto and was transported to the Coffee County jail, where he remains incarcerated, according to Douglas Now.
