Description
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are now in effect.
The 2025 bill signed last year adds new SNAP work requirements. Able-bodied adults without dependents must meet those requirements to receive benefits beyond three months.
The age limit rises from 54 to 64, and the child exemption age drops from 18 to 14.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates 1.1 million people could lose benefits.
One Georgia food bank estimates between $500 million and $800 million worth of food assistance will no longer be available for families across Georgia.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration says only 28% of people who are on SNAP and are not disabled do work, calling the program a failure.
The White House says it is strengthening the program for those who truly need it.
