PLAINS, Ga. (WALB) — The hometown of former President Jimmy Carter is celebrating what would have been his 102nd birthday Thursday (Oct. 1) with a day of events honoring his life and legacy.
Carter was born Oct. 1, 1924 in Plains, the small Sumter County community he called home throughout much of his life. The city recognizes Oct. 1 as “President Jimmy Carter Day.”
Carter died Dec. 29, 2024 at the age of 100. Nearly two years later, residents and visitors are gathering in his hometown to continue the tradition of celebrating his birthday and remembering his connection to southwest Georgia.
Thursday’s events in Plains include:
- 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Trolley tours beginning at the Billy Carter Station
- 2 p.m.: Matinee showing of the “Carter Country” documentary at Plains High School
- 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.: Main Street birthday celebration featuring a performance by David Osborne, along with cake and ice cream
- 6:30 p.m.: Premiere of “Carter Country” at Plains High School
