(TNND) — David Souter, a retired Supreme Court associate justice, has died.
He was 85.
The Supreme Court announced Friday morning that Souter died at home in New Hampshire.
President George H.W. Bush appointed Souter to the high court in 1990.
Souter served on the Supreme Court for 19 years.
He previously served as attorney general of New Hampshire, on the Supreme Court of New Hampshire and as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
“Justice David Souter served our Court with great distinction for nearly twenty years,” Chief Justice John Roberts said in a statement. “He brought uncommon wisdom and kindness to a lifetime of public service. After retiring to his beloved New Hampshire in 2009, he continued to render significant service to our branch by sitting regularly on the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit for more than a decade. He will be greatly missed.”
