CRISP COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) warned residents about a scam involving fake text messages.
According to CCSO, the text messages claim to be a “final notice” from a court. Officials said the messages threaten fines, license suspension or arrest if immediate payment is not made.
The messages are reportedly designed to look official, often using legal language, case numbers and urgent deadlines to pressure recipients into responding.
Law enforcement officials emphasize that the messages are not legitimate and should not be trusted.
The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office said it will never:
- Send text messages or call demanding payment
- Threaten arrest via text message
- Request payment through QR codes or unknown links
Officials also warn that legitimate court or law enforcement communications do not include urgent “pay now or be arrested” language.
According to authorities, scammers often try to mimic official notices by including fake seals, legal terminology and threatening language meant to create panic and prompt immediate action.
Some versions of the scam may also include QR codes or links directing users to fraudulent payment pages.

What to do if you receive the message
Residents are urged to take the following steps if they receive a suspicious message:
- Do not click links or scan QR codes
- Do not send money or personal information
- Delete the message immediately
- Report it as spam or junk
Anyone unsure about the legitimacy of a message is encouraged to contact CCSO directly at 229-276-2600.
