WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee will inspect the food distributed in Gaza on Friday, as the humanitarian crisis gets worse and the death toll of Palestinians continues to climb.
"We are committed to seeing this come to an end," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
The Gaza Health Ministry said on Thursday that at least 91 Palestinians were killed and more than 600 were wounded while attempting to get aid in the past 24 hours.
Trump announced on Monday that the U.S. would change its approach to Gaza, pledging immediate action to help starving civilians in the war-torn enclave.
“It’s a terrible situation,” Trump said alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland. “The whole thing is terrible.”
The U.S. plans to establish American-run food centers inside Gaza, with Trump saying the images of children suffering from malnutrition compelled him to act.
“I mean, some of those kids, that’s real starvation stuff," Trump said. "I see it. And you can’t fake that. So we’re going to be even more involved.”
The president also cast doubt on the possibility of negotiating an end to the conflict, accusing Hamas of holding on to Israeli hostages to retain leverage.
“Hamas has become very difficult to deal with,” Trump said. “They don't want to give up these last 20 [hostages] because they think as long as we have them, they have protection.”
