Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - With early voting underway in Georgia’s State Senate District 12 race, WALB invited all three candidates to sit down for the same interview format: an on-camera conversation covering key issues followed by questions submitted by viewers.
Two candidates, Edward Brown and Tracy Taylor, accepted the invitation and answered questions on topics including health care access, economic development, data centers and redistricting.
What WALB asked Morgan to address
WALB’s planned interview with Morgan included questions on:
- Housing: affordable and workforce housing needs across the district
- Agriculture: protecting farmland and balancing growth pressures
- Education: school funding, safety, and student outcomes
- Economic development: job creation strategies for rural communities
- Data centers: resource use, infrastructure demands, and local impacts
- Redistricting: views on how map changes could affect southwest Georgia
Planned opening questions
The interview would have started with Morgan’s background and his path to the campaign:
- Who is Corey Morgan, and what brought him to this point?
- Morgan served as a councilman in the City of Camilla. Beyond his role in city government, in what other ways has he been involved in helping the community?
- Why should voters trust him with the District 12 seat?
- What does “Morgan for the People” mean, and what are examples that support that message?
- Why should voters choose him over the other two candidates?
Election history and controversy questions
WALB also planned to ask Morgan about a specific claim raised by a viewer:
- Bobby Keigans asked: “Is it true that you owe $130,000 worth of court-ordered attorney fees that you owe the citizens of Mitchell County?”
- Follow-up: If so, have arrangements been made to pay that?
Health care and affordability
- What specific legislation would he support to improve access and affordability?
- How would he pay for it?
- What measurable change should voters expect?
- Why hasn’t the change already happened?
Economic development and working-class concerns
WALB planned to ask Morgan to detail a concrete plan for rural job creation and investment:
- What is his plan to bring sustainable jobs and investment to rural communities in District 12?
- What does he believe is the biggest issue facing working-class families in District 12?
- What legislation would he prioritize during his first year in office?
Viewer-submitted questions
- Cheryl Abel: What is your stance or view on data centers?
- James Malphrus: What are your plans to address data centers’ growing need for resources and impacts on local communities?
- Stump Shine: If you win, will your voters see a difference?
- Freddie Carlisle: What is your stance on education and violence in our cities and small towns?
- Quanchiellan Moses: Rural hospitals and health care access continue to decline across South Georgia. What specific policies would you fight for to improve health care access and keep rural hospitals open in District 12?
- Hope Ponder: What are your plans for addressing the need for affordable and workforce housing?
- Hope Ponder: What specific industries are you going to fight to bring to Albany that can create stable jobs paying a livable wage?
- District 12 covers a large portion of southwest Georgia. Redistricting has become a major issue nationwide. How do you feel about the recent Supreme Court decision and its possible impact on Georgia?
- Do you think redistricting will positively or negatively impact the people of southwest Georgia — and why?
