VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The City of Valdosta has named Jennifer Wheeler a finalist for city manager, making her the first woman to be selected as a finalist for the position, according to the city.

City officials said Wheeler has more than 18 years of experience in government administration, with experience in program and project management, strategic planning, and financial oversight.
As part of the transition, Wheeler will be mentored by Interim City Manager Al Crace, who has served in the role since Nov. 7, 2025, the city said. Crace will continue supporting the city in a mentorship capacity through 2027 to help ensure continuity during the leadership change.
“This is a historic and exciting moment for the City of Valdosta,” Scott James Matheson said in a statement. “Jennifer Wheeler brings a wealth of experience and a forward-thinking approach that aligns with our vision for the future.”
The city said Wheeler’s selection reflects its focus on leadership, strategic progress, and representation in local government.
