LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Las Vegas Metro Police have identified the shooter in the Las Vegas Athletic Club incident as 34-year-old Daniel Ortega.

During a news conference, police revealed that Ortega fired 24 rounds inside the gym before being confronted by officers.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, according to investigators.

LVMPD reported that the initial emergency calls began just after 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

Callers described a man shooting inside the Las Vegas Athletic Club on North Rainbow.

"He was armed with a rifle when he walked into the gym. The suspect walked past several people leaving the gym and approached an employee working the front desk," said Assistant Sheriff Jamie Prosser. "A second employee approached Ortega, and the two briefly exchanged words. The employee fled when the gunman raised his rifle and started shooting, striking the employee. The suspect followed the employee further into the business and continued to fire rounds."

Police stated that shortly after the shooting began, Ortega returned to the front of the building due to a malfunction with his weapon.

They credited this malfunction with preventing further casualties.

"Fortunately, this gentleman had a malfunction in his weapon, which saved this from becoming a mass casualty event," said Prosser.

The investigation is ongoing, and the three officers who fired at Ortega are on paid leave, which is standard procedure.

Police also said Ortega was an active member at that LVAC location.
