Albany Police Chief Michael Persley reminded pedestrians to use sidewalks and crosswalks when they are available. Persley asked pedestrians to avoid using turning lanes when traveling on bikes and scooters.

“If you are crossing traffic please sir please ma’am we prefer you to use a crosswalk, and as always, where sidewalks are available, please use the sidewalks and not be out in traffic.”

Other ways for pedestrians can enhance safety is wearing bright, reflective clothing. The Georgia Department of Highway Safety says pedestrians should avoid using distracting devices that impair focus and hearing.

Chief Persley reminded drivers, Georgia is a hands-free state. Under Georgia law, drivers are not allowed to use electronic devices behind the wheel. Drivers cannot

  • Have a phone in your hand or be in contact with an electronic device
  • Read write or text using digital forms of written communication
  • Use an electronic device to record video while on the road.
  • Using phones hands-free is acceptable when using voice-to-text

Violators could face fines starting at $50 and 1 point added to a license for the first conviction. The fine and points go up for each conviction within a 24-month period.
