GRADY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - The Grady County community is remembering Jonathan “Jon” Moore, a former Cairo High School football player who passed away Thursday, March 5, in a car crash.

Moore, a 2025 graduate and student-athlete, died following a single-vehicle accident in Grady County, according to investigators.

The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) said a Dodge Charger veered off the roadway and hit a culvert. The car rolled multiple times and ejected Moore, investigators said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Moore’s family said they remember Jon Moore as a son, brother and uncle. They said he touched the lives of many and made a lasting impact on the community.

“He was always a loving, giving — He would give the shirt off his back to anyone,“ his aunt, Misty Thomas said. ”He couldn’t have much, but what little he had, he gave it faithfully.”

Cairo High School remembers Moore as a former student-athlete, who played a Guard and a Defensive Tackle on the school’s football team.

Moore graduated from the high school in 2025. The school posted a statement on its Facebook page this week.

“The Cairo High School family mourns the loss of one of our 2025 graduates, Mr. Jonathan Moore. He will always be a part of the Syrupmaker family. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who loved him.”

Jon Moore’s mom, Wallette Moore, said he was working and pursuing his barbershop business after graduation. She noted how his friends admired his character.

“[Jon’s friend] said, ‘You did a good job. Jonathan tried to keep us in line,” she explained. “And people don’t realize, at this time when you’re going through stuff like this, you want to know that you raised your children right.”

They said the outpouring of support from the community is a reminder of how many lives Jon Moore touched.

“Not only was he a light to his peers but to our family as well,” his cousin, Destiny Thomas, said. “He was so selfless. And I think that’s just what’s so touching for us to see how everyone is just supporting us when we needed it.”

To help cover unexpected funeral expenses, Moore’s family has created a GoFundMe page.

Jon Moore was set to be married to his fiancé, Zykerria Little.

His funeral is Saturday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at the Greater New Corinth Missionary Baptist Church in Cairo.
