ATTAPULGUS, Ga. (WALB) - A new partnership between Second Harvest of South Georgia and Elephant Aid International will help provide a steady supply of fresh fruits and vegetables for elephants living at Elephant Refuge North America in Attapulgus, according to the organization.
Community members are invited to volunteer to help transport donated produce to the refuge each week.
How the program works
Second Harvest will provide surplus produce. Volunteers must have their own transportation. Produce will be boxed and loaded into volunteers’ vehicles by Second Harvest staff.
Pickup takes place every Friday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Second Harvest location in Thomasville. Volunteers will then deliver the produce to Attapulgus.
About Elephant Aid International
Elephant Aid International is a nonprofit organization that develops approaches to caring for and managing elephants. The organization works to unchain elephants in Asia, teaches methods of training and handling elephants and provides a refuge for retired elephants in the United States.
According to the organization, fresh fruits and vegetables play a vital role in a balanced diet for the elephants.
“This partnership creates an easy but powerful way for the community to help care for the elephants,” said Carol Buckley, founder and CEO of Elephant Aid International. “Just a short drive and a little time each week can help ensure they receive the fresh, healthy food they need to thrive.”
Those interested in volunteering can contact EAI at 229-465-3115 or [email protected].
